5 ways iPhone users get ripped off

Got an iPhone? Here’s how some companies charge you something… and give you nothing.

1. You pay $360 for mobile broadband you don’t use

AT&T offers iPhone users two plans for wireless data. The DataPlus gives you up to 200 megabytes of data per month for $15 additional to the voice plan, and the DataPro plan gives you up to 2 gigabytes for $25 more.

There is no option for zero mobile broadband data.

The reality is, however, that about one-quarter of all smart phone users don’t use any — not a single kilobyte — of mobile broadband data, according to a new Nielsen study.

I don’t know what the numbers are for iPhone users specifically, but some unpublished number of users don’t or wouldn’t use any mobile broadband data, but pay full price for one of the two plans.

AT&T could offer a zero mobile broadband data plan (it would be worth it for many to use only Wi-Fi) but it would rather charge those customers a minimum of $360 during the contract period in exchange for nothing.
2. You pay $325 to not use the carrier anymore

Carriers let you break your contract, but only after charging you an “early termination fee.” The fees vary from one carrier to another, ranging from zero to $50 on the low-end to up to $200 and up at the high-end of the market. Many of these fees are prorated, so the closer you get to the end of your contract, the less you pay to end it.

Days before the iPhone 4 shipped, AT&T dramatically hiked its early-termination fee for smartphones from $175 to an incredible $325. (Verizon charges a $350 early-termination fee for its high-end smartphones.)

Let’s step back and consider what’s happening here. At the time it locks in customers for this termination fee, AT&T enjoys a monopoly on iPhone sales. But at some time during this 2-year contract, the company will lose the monopoly.

Customers who prefer a competitor, and want to use an iPhone on another carrier will have to pay the monopoly pricing for early termination — even after the monopoly is over.

Users unhappy with AT&T service will have to pay $325 to not use the service, even if it’s one day before their contract ends.
3. You pay $18 for committing to a new, two-year contract

The timing on the breathtakingly awesome new iPhone 4 couldn’t have been better for AT&T. Just before credible rumors hit that Verizon would offer the iPhone in just six months, AT&T graciously offered to re-commit iPhone customers to two-year contracts early if they pre-ordered new iPhone.

They get the money for the phone and the service, and protect themselves with an early-termination fee. But they also charge an $18 upgrade fee.

What’s that for? AT&T will tell you that it’s to help cover the cost of changing you over to the phone. The truth is that for most customers, the cost to AT&T to service your contract is far below what you pay.

They could simply view any costs to upgrade you as part of the service they provide in exchange for a lucrative two-year contract, during which time you’ll pay well over a thousand dollars.

I say the $18 upgrade fee is money for nothing. They charge it because, well, they can.

4. You pay $240 for the high-end data plan you don’t use

AT&T offers tethering for the iPhone — finally. They’ll charge you $20 per month for tethering, which is a little pricey but fair enough.

The catch: In order to use tethering, you have to pay the more-expensive DataPro plan, even if your data usage is within the limits of the less-expensive DataPlus plan.

In other words, if your data usage is below 200 megabytes per month, your AT&T data plan would cost $15. Tethering costs $20 per month. That’s a total of $35 dollars per month for under 200 megabytes plus tethering.

But AT&T charges you not $35, but $45 dollars.

That extra $10 per month is just money AT&T takes from you and in return provides nothing at all. If you need tethering, but don’t need a lot of data, you’ll pay $240 over the life of your contract for that high-end DataPro plan you’re not using.

5. You pay full price for apps you don’t use

What’s the right price for smartphone apps? That’s a tough call, because the category is so new.

Comparing Android apps with iPhone apps, however, it’s safe to say that iPhone apps tend to be far more expensive on average. And a far higher percentage of Android apps are free of charge.

On the PC, “apps” — inexpensive software from independent developers — is very often free to try. You pay only after you’ve actually used the software. The same goes for most for-pay services online.

However, most iPhone apps have no such trial period. And unlike major applications, such as Microsoft Office, most iPhone apps are too obscure to attract product reviewers.

That means you have to pay for iPhone apps in order to try them or even to find out anything at all about them. If they aren’t what you want, you’re free to delete them. But you still have to pay, in most cases.

The iPhone is great. But be forewarned: Using an iPhone means companies are going to rip you off by charging you real money, and providing nothing at all in return. And there’s really nothing you can do about it.

5 Reasons Why Google Chrome Will Beat Internet Explorer (IE)

Google Chrome Vs IE

Google’s Chrome browser is shining brightly, and it’s not hard to see why. First, the stats: According to the latest NetApplications figures, Chrome now has 6.7 percent of the browser market–a stunning rise from zero prior to 2009. Competing browsers are either treading water or, as in the case of Microsoft Internet Explorer, in precipitous freefall.

So what explains Chrome’s sudden burst of popularity? Here are five reasons:

1. It’s very fast:

Google’s browser is a speed demon. PC World’s performance tests have shown that Chrome has the fastest page-loading times versus leading competitors Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Opera Software’s Opera. Anecdotally, I’ve noticed that the speedy Chrome runs circles around slow, lumbering IE. Sometimes, however, Chrome’s need for speed is annoying. The browser times out too quickly and fails to load web pages because, well, it’s too impatient. Hopefully Google will let users adjust this setting in the future.

2. It’s very simple:

Like many Google apps and services, Chrome emphasizes ease of use. Compared with IE, there are fewer menus, options, and features to configure. Usually that’s a good thing, but not always. Sometimes I find myself reverting to IE for, say, the print preview feature. Could you add that, Google?

3. Better security:

IE’s security mishaps are well chronicled. To be fair, Microsoft has worked diligently to make its browser more secure, but nagging problems persist. By comparison, Chrome is a paradise of protection due in part to two factors: architecture and obscurity. Chrome’s use of “sandboxing,” isolating Internet commands from the operating system and other apps and data, makes it harder for hackers to load malware onto PCs. At Vancover’s Pwn2Own contest in March, security experts were able to hack the other leading browsers, but not Chrome. In fact, they didn’t even try to hack Chrome, the New York Times reports. It’s important to note, however, that Chrome’s low market share also contributes to its relative safety. If you’re a malware creator, why direct your efforts toward Chrome when IE represents such a big, fat target?

4. Runs well on older hardware:

There’s still a very large installed base of Windows XP machines out there, particularly in the enterprise market. Chrome’s speediness is ideal for older hardware with slower components.

5. Chrome’s ad campaign:

Google may have inexplicably under-marketed its tepidly received Nexus One smartphone, but it hasn’t made the same mistake with the Chrome browser. A TV ad campaign helped introduce Chrome to the masses, most of whom don’t give much thought to their choice of browser.

Microsoft, of course, will continue to improve Internet Explorer, as will the developers of competing browsers. But Google Chrome’s early success shows that simplicity sells.

2010 Kia Forte Named IIHS Top Safety Pick

http://www.automedia.com/cs/blogs/auto_news/10AMC/2010-Kia-Forte-crash-test.jpg

2010 Kia Forte crash testIt is an exclusive club now that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has added its stringent roof-crush test to the qualifications for earning a Top Safety Pick designation, but the fun and affordable Kia Forte earned the right to join the ranks. To earn a Top Safety Pick accolade, a vehicle must perform well in IIHS frontal offset, side, and rear crash tests, as well as roof crush and have electronic stability control available. (ESC is standard on the Forte.)

A new small car introduced for the 2010 model year, the Forte replaces the Kia Spectra. The Spectra was rated acceptable for frontal crash protection and only marginal for side crash protection. ESC wasn’t available even as an option on the Spectra.

“Forte offers buyers a youthful and dynamically styled vehicle with an impressive array of standard safety features, and being honored as an IIHS ‘Top Safety Pick’ award winner furthers its position as a top contender in its segment and a vehicle that offers consumers the entire package,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing of Kia Motors America (KMA).

Available in three trims, LX, EX and SX, pricing for the Forte sedan starts at $13,695 for the LX trim, while the EX begins at $15,995 and the SX starts at $17,495. In addition to competitive pricing, Forte also showcases numerous standard safety features with active front headrests, advanced two-stage airbags, front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with an antilock brake system (ABS), brake assist , electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), electronic stability control (ESC), and a traction control system.

NBA’s Top 10 Players 2010

This probably NBA’s Top 10 Players 2010.. Please leave your comment either agree or not..

1. Kobe Bryant

kobe10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

After winning his 4th NBA Title, the guy hasn’t missed a beat. You can say the guy actually got better over the summer, working out with Hakeem Olajuwon and introducing a solid post game to his offensive arsenal. Many people want to crown LeBron James at the top of this list, but it just does not work that way. Kobe is still at the top of his game and he is winning rings, not LeBron! Expect Kobe to win his second MVP in 2010′.

2. LeBron James

lebron10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

LeBron is a beast to say the least. After winning the MVP last season, LeBron has a very good chance of winning it yet again this season. There is nobody else in the world at the same level of Kobe and LeBron. The man get’s better and better every single season. If you would have told me 10 years ago that one day we would see a player with Michael Jordan’s athleticism and the size of Karl Malone, I would have called you crazy. It’s crazy to see what LeBron can do on a basketball court.

3. Dwyane Wade

dwade10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

It’s crazy how this guy is always being overlooked because of Kobe and LeBron. Dwade is flat out a great player. The word Great get’s used in sports far too often. When I say great I say future hall of famer. The big question for Wade will be if he can lead his team to a competitive season and past the first round of the playoffs. If he can do that, Wade will reach a level that LeBron and Kobe have reached with getting the most out of their teammates.

4. Chris Paul

cp310 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

What needs to be said here. CP3 is the best point guard in the world hands down. He’s nasty competitive. He can finish going to the rim like no other point guard in this era. He can pass, shoot, score, defend. The only downside here is the New Orleans Hornets organization lack of willingness to support him by providing him solid players and a coaching staff to work with. Outside of that, Chris Paul is holding his own as the modern day version of Isaiah Thomas.

5. Carmelo Anthony

carmelo10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

If Carmelo Anthony can stay healthy, he has a good chance of winning his first MVP award in 2010. I don’t know what Melo is eating for breakfast, but the guy has made himself unstoppable.  He’s an offensive scoring machine, and he has stepped up his game defensively to an elite level. Melo proved in last year’s playoff run that he is one of the leagues top 5 players and cannot be stopped by anybody when he has the ball in his hands.

6. Kevin Garnett

garnett10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

People are moving this guy out of their top 10 lists because of his injured Knee and his age. Baloney! The Celtics are one of two dominant teams in the league (the Lakers being the other) and Garnett is by far the cornerstone of the Celtics. Without him they are nothing. Even though Garnett’s offensive numbers are down, his defensive precense is still as frightening to opposing teams as ever. And talking about intangibles, nobody brings more leadership and effort day in and day out than Kevin Garnett. He’s a poor man’s Bill Russell, and that my friends is quite the compliment.

7. Dirk Nowitzki

dirk10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

I don’t know if it’s cause he’s German, or because he’s white, or what exactly it is. But people seem to always sleep on Dirk Nowitzki. But Dirk continues to put up huge numbers since he won his first MVP award a few years back. His team continues to be competitive, and he continues to show more and more toughness each season. Truly one of the most gifted 7 Footers we have ever seen in Basketball. He is a joy to watch!

8. Dwight Howard

dwighthoward10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

Popularity wise Dwight Howard is easily in the top 3 or 4 of this list. But being one of the best players in the NBA has nothing to do with popularity, and everything to do with your game. He’s the strongest guy in the league. And he’s the most dominant player inside 4-5 feet from the rim. Defensively he can change entire playoff seasons with his inside precense. But he won’t move higher up on this list until he can provide leadership to his team, and develop more of an inside post-up offensive game.

9. Deron Williams

deron10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

The only reason Deron Williams doesn’t get more “pub” as one of the premier players in the NBA today is because of where he plays. That being Utah of course. Combine that with a team full of lazy, unambitious, self-serving players around him and you can see the difficulties he has to deal with. But every year he gets better and better. Scoring, passing, ball-handling, defense etc. The guy can do it all at his position. Throw Chris Paul out of the equation, and Deron is the best point guard in the World.

10. Steve Nash

stevenash10 NBAs Top 10 Players 2010

Steve Nash didn’t make the list in 2009, primarily because the Suns stopped winning and Nash started to look old. This season however is a completely different story. Nash is showing no signs of his age whatsoever, and is leading his Phoenix Suns to a winning season with an under-talented team and an inexperienced head coach. The guy is still one of the funnest players to watch in the game today! Don’t be suprised if this guy pulls a John Stockton on us and plays til’ he’s 40.
